How to stop bamboo infestations in frontyard?

Hi Team,

I moved to a new place recently with a beautiful garden and realised this week it got infestation heavily by bamboos. The next neighbour have a bamboo hedge and I am guessing it's started from there and now all over our garden. I tried to cut some of them but started to pop up within two days again and again. It's all over my frontyard with long roots spreading over every where. I would really appreciate any advice. I want to save my garden. Thanks.

Re: Bamboo infestations in frontyard

Hi @Nabila,

It sounds like the bamboo has spread quite extensively through your front garden, which can be very challenging to manage once it takes hold. The best approach now is to keep cutting back the new shoots as they appear and, immediately after cutting them, apply a non-selective herbicide directly onto the freshly cut tops. Doing this straight after cutting is important so the plant absorbs the herbicide through the open stem and it travels down into the root system. You’ll likely need to repeat this process several times as new shoots continue to emerge before the bamboo is completely eradicated.

When using herbicide, always follow the directions on the container carefully. Make sure you wear the recommended protective equipment, such as gloves and eye protection, and take care when mixing and applying the product to avoid contact with other plants you want to keep.

Re: Bamboo infestations in frontyard

Hi @MitchellMc ,

Thank you for your quick response.

I just read the article as well. I was wondering does any weed killer will work? I have one at home. But not sure about the components in that.

I will try to start poisoning the bamboos this week. Thanks you again.

Re: Bamboo infestations in frontyard

You'd need to pop a picture up or let us know what the weed killer is, @Nabila. Essentially, it needs to be one that uses Glyphosate as the active ingredient.

Hi @MitchellMc ,

This is my one which doesn't seem to have the component. I will buy one today and try with that.

Thank you very much for your help!

You'll need something stronger, like what I've linked to @Nabila. Good luck!

Re: Bamboo infestations in frontyard

Hi @MitchellMc,

I started poisoning the bamboos from last week. But I can see it started spreading roots in my lawn. I can see some of the roots that seems impossible to remove. Poisoned as per your instructions. But I am scared now. I have 5 veggie beds. Not sure how to save them. I am thinking how to stop this bamboo to spread all over to my veggie beds. The neighbours have bamboos all over their yards. It just feels like impossible to stop bamboo infestation. Any more suggestions? Thank you very much for your help.

Re: Bamboo infestations in frontyard

My only suggestion would be to cut those visible roots and apply the poison directly to the cut end closest to the bamboo @Nabila. You could also dig a small trench between the bamboo and the veggie patches and sever any roots you find. Hopefully this will prevent further progress until you can kill the plant.

Re: Bamboo infestations in frontyard

Hi @MitchellMc ,

Thank you very much for your quick response and help!

How do I kill all of them?? They have horizontal roots showing on the lawn. Don't know how to poison them or where is the mother plant!

Thanks.

Re: Bamboo infestations in frontyard

The mother plant would be the bamboo hedge in the neighbouring yard, @Nabila. Once you locate the horizontal roots, you can cut them with a pruning saw. Paint poison on the cut ends.

Removing bamboo is not a simple, quick, or easy process. As long as there is an established hedge on the neighbour's side, you'll likely see continued progress of roots into your property.
