Just wondering if it is possible to strip paint and spray paint off aluminium windows and door? Would turpentine be enough and would it damage the aluminium at all if soaked in turpentine? Am open to other ideas/solutions 😀
Hi @projectmumdanni,
Thank you for your question about stripping paint from aluminium windows.
Yes, you can strip paint and spray paint off aluminium windows and doors.
Turpentine can soften some types of paint, especially oil-based, but it’s usually not strong enough on its own to fully remove dried or baked-on paints. Turpentine won’t damage aluminium if used briefly, but soaking it for long periods isn’t ideal, as it can dull the surface or affect anodised finishes.
It is worth trying turpentine initially, but you will likely get a better result using a metal-friendly stripper such as this DIGGERS Paint Stripper.
Keep in mind that if your aluminium is powder-coated or anodised, removing paint might damage the original finish, so testing in a small hidden area first is crucial before moving on to a larger area.
The basic process is to apply your stripper, wait as directed, then gently wipe or scrape off the softened paint with a plastic scraper. Afterwards, clean with warm soapy water and dry thoroughly.
Let me know what you think, and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
