I have this mailbox. I would like to smooth the surface so I can apply decorative tiles to it. What materials/ method would you recommend?
in my vision I’d love to end up with something like this:
Hello @lucefest
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your mailbox.
Is your mailbox made of masonry or is it fiberglass? Fiberglass due to its flexible nature will flex during different times of the day due to temperature changes. This flexing surface is not ideal for tiled surfaces and will cause the tile to separate from the surface and fall off. But if it is made of masonry, The surface just needs to be scuffed with 240grit sandpaper to rough up the surface. A primer will need to be used before you start tiling. I understand what you are trying to accomplish, but the tight turns and curves of your current mailbox will make it a challenge to give it the same appearance.
Here is a handy step-by-step guide: How To Create A Tiled Table (some of the techniques used are applicable to your project)
