We have just had a big load of firewood for next season dropped and noticed it has termites in some of the wood. We are storing it on pallets in a shed that is not attached to our house. Is this something we should be concerned about and treat? And how should we treat it? We have a linea weatherboard house too. We live in North Canterbury New Zealand so get warm summer and cold winters.
Thanks
Hi @sarah1011,
It’s not unusual to find termites in delivered firewood, as they’re often present in old or damp timber. Since your firewood is stored off the ground in a detached shed, the risk to your home is relatively low. The best approach is to isolate the affected pieces and burn them as soon as possible rather than keeping them stored. Avoid spraying insecticide, as it’s rarely effective in this situation. If you see live termites in the wood, it’s worth contacting the supplier to let them know and discuss your options. Keeping your firewood pile dry, raised, and well away from the house will help prevent further issues.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
