We live in a rented Queenslander. During the summer months, my bedroom becomes almost uninhabitable and is consistently up to ten degrees hotter than the rest of the house. There is no air conditioning in my bedroom. If I seal up the living room and leave my bedroom door open, I do find some relief from the extreme heat. The sun literally bakes my side of the house all day, and you can feel the heat coming off the window if you get too close.
Would installing an awning or shade cloth help with the temperature, and are there renter-friendly options? As I mentioned before, this is a Queenslander, meaning once you're outside, the window is quite high.
As I write this post, the outside temperature is 29, but the temperature inside my bedroom is 36. It reached 40 the other day. I couldn't go in my room. Please help, slowly boiling.
Hi @brettk,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
Unfortunately, I am not aware of any awnings or similar products that you could really describe as renter-friendly because they would all require mechanical fixing to the structure of the house.
There may be a way to install things like shade cloth or an awning using a structure that you have anchored to the ground, and that would be removable later, but it is hard to say without seeing things. If you could upload some photos of the area, some ideas might come to mind.
Obviously, adding shade is the primary goal here, and I will certainly assist further once we can see the area, but have you considered something like a portable air conditioner, an evaporative cooler or a strong pedestal fan? They would help with the extreme heat quickly while you look at other options for reducing that heat build up.
I'll wait till you respond and see what you are working with, then do my best to assist further.
Jacob
