I am trying to reattach the canvas seats to my outdoor wooden chairs with cord threaded through eyelets. I have done one and the seat is sagging . Does anyone have any tips to avoid this?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Ellen80. It's brilliant to have you join us and many thanks for your questions on chair repair.
It would be really helpful if you could add some images of the seat so our members can better understand exactly how it’s latched together. If you need any assistance uploading photos, just let us know.
From what you’ve described, it sounds like the cord isn’t being pulled tight enough, or the cord itself may be stretching. Both can cause the seat to sag. One approach is to create a bit of leverage to get more tension on the cord. For example, once you’ve threaded it through an eyelet and are about to wrap it around the frame of the chair, you could loop the cord around a screwdriver to make a simple T-handle. This gives you something to pull on and increases the tension before you continue threading it through the next eyelet.
Another option is to use a small fulcrum or clamp to help pull the cord tighter while you secure it. Make sure the cord material itself isn’t too stretchy; sometimes replacing it with a slightly firmer cord can make a big difference. Take your time with each section, pulling gradually, tightly and evenly as you go, and the seat should sit snugly without sagging. The issue might be that you are trying to pull the cord tight at the end once it's been pulled through all the eyelets. You should instead add tension and tighten as you go. You can even add a knot midday to tie off and lock it into position.
Once you’ve tried these techniques, feel free to share an update with photos so we can see how it’s going and offer any further tips.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
