How to utilise dead space down the side of townhouse?

We have this corridor of dead space along the side of our townhouse. There is no gate in the fence, not a heap of sunlight, and windows into the kitchen that prevent us from closing it and using as a storage shed. We know that at the least we want to maintain the privacy provided by the foliage on both sides of the fence.

I'm lost for ideas, especially want to make the most of it because we already have a pretty small backyard!

Re: Dead space ideas

Hello @ally_123

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about the space beside your house.

This is an excellent opportunity to stretch your imagination in regards to this unused space. I would like to propose an easy upgrade that smartens up this space without blowing the budget. I suggest putting in some paving steps in combination with some round pebbles. To improve the view, I recommend covering your Colorbond fence with Merbau fence panels. This would be a basic upgrade to the area. You also have the option of adding highlights such as P&P Silver School of Fish Metal Wall Decor with Sturdy Frame and Coastal Ocean-Inspired Design, 99cm Black Tree of Life Wall Art Hanging Metal Iron Sculpture and a Hartman Cambridge Steel & Cast Iron Bench.

To brighten the area up you can put in Lytworx 50 Warm White Connectable Aspen Festoon Lights going back and forth between your brick wall and your fence to highlight the area in the evening. This also has the benefit of keeping the area bright in the evenings.

Re: Ideas for dead space down the side of townhouse?

Hi @,

I would like photos of your 'pretty small backyard' to give me some ideas of possible suggestions for down the side.

Cheers

Hi @ally_123,

Welcome to the community. We look forward to seeing how you can transform your garden.

I would recommend checking out our Top 10 most popular side yard projects for inspiration. I would also consider the potential for a vertical garden. Check out 8 ways to create a vertical garden for ideas.

Hope that helps.

Re: How to utilise dead space down the side of townhouse?

Good Morning @ally_123

hahahah man, how can we beat @EricL 's suggestion  That looks pretty funky what he has put together

Some ideas of things to add -

Windchimes, I prefer metal but they could be a bit loud. Maybe bamboo ones?

Vines along the fence - Using reo for atatching it to the existing fence (or Erics timber fencing )

Something colourful. - Stained glass window frame or hanging pieces of glass

Groundcover - cantreally add to the pebbles and pavers. Would be a nice tidy and long term option.

Fence - second option, spraypaint it a neutral colour. The faded green draws our eyes at the moment.

Fake windowframes with mirrors in them is the last idea I can think of. So an old white timber window with either a mirror installed or silver painted backing. Was just looking up if Bunnings sells mirror paint, kinda but would ask the paint crew for more info)
