repaint concrete drive

repaint concrete drive

Just moved into a house and the driveway needs a little love, must have been the original paint from 7 yrs ago. What do I need to do to prep the surface, would a sand and spot prime be the way forward or does all the pant need to come off? I have pressure washed it and that removed some  paint but to take the rest off would be a 1cm away job for the whole drive.

I have used an angle grinder with wire attachment to remove some paint and test how porous the surface is, where it’s painted the water doesn’t soak in at all, where it’s now bare it’s a very slow soak. Any advice would be great as I don’t want to paint the thing only for the paint to lift when I park the car on it.

Re: repaint concrete drive

Hello @Hobojumunk

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about painting your driveway.

Can you please tell us what type of wire attachment you used to scrape the old paint off? I generally suggest using the Josco 100mm Twistknot Bevel Brush or the Craftright 75mm Crimped Cup Brush. There are other options, but these would be the least destructive of the steel brush paint strippers. They will strip the paint off without digging too deeply into the concrete. It's important that the old paint be removed before applying a new layer of paint on the garage floor. If the old paint is not removed and painted over the paint manufacturer will void the warranty.

Please remember to wear personal protection such as gloves, goggles and a mask when stripping the paint off.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
