Introduce yourself to the community

Welcome to your Workshop. It is great to have you as a member of the community. We encourage you to say hello and introduce yourself.

Please reply to this post and tell us a bit about yourself. Whatever information you feel comfortable sharing is fine.

You might like to tell us about your current D.I.Y. and garden projects, your work, your passions, your hobbies, your dreams, what you struggle with, what you hope to learn from this community, and/or your favourite ice cream flavour.

And for something truly revealing about yourself - tell us what you call a barbecued sausage served on a single piece of bread.

We look forward to your post and getting to know you. Thanks for joining the discussion.

Re: Introduce yourself to the community

Sorry, I forgot to make a comment about sausages and ice cream (obviously not together - ugh!)

The bread and sausage thing is a banga sanga (in my opinion) see also https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gfx1BCpnNbs for an especially Australian version.

As for the ice cream: I make a vanilla gelato that's rather yummy.

Cheers,

Frances

Re: Introduce yourself to the community

Welcome to Workshop @Frances. It's wonderful to have you as a member of the community. I hope you find plenty of useful information and advice on the site, and enjoy the company of like-minded community members.

It certainly looks like you have some great projects ahead. I'm sure the community will be keen to assist with tips and inspiration. Having a scrapboard for ideas is always very useful. We are thinking about how we might do something similiar here on Workshop so you can save your favourite posts and photos to a scrapbook.

Looking forward to seeing more of your posts soon. Perhaps you'd like to start a new discussion about one of your projects, put up some "before" pictures from your unit and get ideas from the community.

Thanks again,

Jason

Wow, great to have you on board Rob

I'm a Workshop tragic, I hang out here a lot, & I've learnt plenty.

Can't wait to see what you've done. : )

Re: Introduce yourself to the community

Hi Catherine,

No idea about Canberra weather but speaking to someone either at you local Bunnings store or nursery, will be able to give you tips on the right time for vegie planting, as well as when you need to water your plants so that you maintain their health, as we all know plants aren't cheap and we invest allot of our time to try to succeed, so a little advice can go a long way.

Good luck.

Cheers,

Barbara

Re: Introduce yourself to the community

Hi Wayne, Agree with Craig about the mens shed.

I had a piece of driftwood that I needed to have drilled so I could place plants, succulents actually, in the holes and display the driftwood on the table, anyway, hubby who can do anything wasn't remotely interested to give it a go, so getting rather frustrated about the holdup of my project, I took the driftwood to the local mens shed and one day later and an amazingly low price of $15, my holes were drilled!!

Re: Introduction : Bill

Hi Bill,

I can relate to your comments about O,H & S. Hubby and I are building right now and just before lunch, I was on top of our new carport and securing hardwood batons with tec screws, love tec screws from a female point of view. As we live off the road some distance and also live in the country, we are safe from those O,H & S people who really don't always live in the real world, personal opinion, making the common person feel like we are morons and can't possibly be safety consious!!

Hubby and I are very careful that we are as safe as possible but I bet if the safety guy came he would fine us for something silly!!

Well done by the way for the success on all your projects so far.

Cheers,

Barbara

@Baretta11

Great advice, as always Barbara, & the staff will be able to advise on cold weather protection products that should lift her success rate.

I must admit, I was clueless about how cold Canberra can be until a few years ago on a forum, so I'd be in the same predicament that Catherine finds herself in.

Re: Introduce yourself to the community

Hi Mike,

It is so refreshing to hear someone praising store staff for the good that they do, as it's most often complaints that most staff have to deal with!!!

I have a rule that I NEVER break when calling a store like Bunnings for example, to the person who has taken my call, I say hello and say their name and ALWAYS ask them how they are today?

Only when they have replied, do I then ask for a department or help in some way.

I do the same thing if I'm face to face too.

I don't consider myself better than the person helping or serving me in a store and that's because I'm not better then them!!

It costs nothing to be polite and make the person on the other end of the phone feel good about themselves.

I once called a store and the man seemed a bit disinterested but I was shocked by his reply after I asked him how he was and he responded in a very humble voice "I'm very well thankyou and thankyou for asking"

I'm assuming NO ONE had ever bothered to be polite enough to ask him how his day was!!

I'm pleased to know there is another polite person out there acknowledging someones good works!!

Well done Mike!!

Cheers,

Barbara

Re: Introduce yourself to the community

@dontisting,

I've just had a quote from Bunnings for our new kitchen in a new build, so interested to hear from you to see how you go and if you have any hiccups.

We are DIY'ing the whole home ourselves and hope we won't have any unforseen hiccups.

Sorry can't answer your question real well but I would think if you really got into it and gutted the old kitchen, cleaned up and if you didn't have to repaint and didn't get held up by either the sparky or the plumber, I would think max 2 weeks but if you pulled out all stops, perhaps half that time. I don't think it's getting the cabinets in that would take the time, after they're actually put together that is but I think the finishing work like splashbacks and benchtops might take longer than most people think.

Good luck.

Cheers,

Barbara
