Hanging rope shelves and D.I.Y. mirror

I have a boring wall with no character, I recently to a mirror off a dresser, which I siliconed to the middle of the wall and added a frame which I painted. No I had an issue, both sides of that mirror lacked something. So I designed, upgraded and made two hanging rope shelves which I stained a beautiful mahogany. It sure made a boring wall look much more inviting.

Re: what to do with a blank wall

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Suzimoore. It's fantastic to have you join us, and many thanks for sharing your wonderful project.

You've certainly improved the look of a blank wall, and your shelving design is very creative. The shelving space looks very functional, judging by the number of items you can store on it. Did you have difficulty getting all the knots positioned correctly for level shelving? I love the mahogany stain and the overall look you've created.

Congrats on a terrific project, and thanks again for sharing.

Re: what to do with a blank wall

Good evening Mitchell, thank you for the welcome and sorry for the delay replying. Thank you also for the compliment, this is my third wood work project. I am teaching myself off of YouTube, so any advise, I’m very greatful.
I delibrately made the shelves a bleach bottle apart, to store bleach if I wanted. lol as you do.  The positioning of the knots was fiddly. But once i applied super glue there was no going back to adjust. Because of the Criss cross design it is more unstable, so I cut two piece of wood from my broom handle and used those up the top to give it more support and stability. Thank again for the comments, and have a great weekend.

Re: what to do with a blank wall

Great idea with the super glue, @Suzimoore. I'll have to try that next time I need to position knots in that nylon rope.

Re: Hanging rope shelves and D.I.Y. mirror

Hi @Suzimoore,

Damn, that looks good!

You really put a lot of thought into that, I particularly like the finish on the wood.

Top marks, this is what DIY is all about, thinking outside the square.

Cheers,

Mike T.

Re: what to do with a blank wall

Why thank you, superglue Certainly held the knots in place and I used my soldering iron to cut the rope leaving a nice clean melted end that won’t fray.

Re: Hanging rope shelves and D.I.Y. mirror

Good morning Mike, thank you so much. I appreciate that. I discovered I do love mahogany, what an excellent colour and stain. Yes I’m very D.I.Y. LOL and blonde so not sure what goes on up there In that head of mine. The only woodwork knowledge I have is once semesters back in high school doing woodworking. But I’m really enjoying trying to make things and see how long it takes before it falls apart, lol. I’m building a double sided brick bbq at the moment, I’ve been smoking meat for roughly ten years,  I had a bare bit of space and I think 🤔 it needed it lol. As you do, and also a sliding (spice rack), cutting the wood to size today actually for that. Anyway thank you 🙏 and have a fantastic Sunday.
