How to install cement sheet VJ in bathroom?

im looking at installing vj panelling into my bathroom and am questioning a few things.

Firstly when installing the panelling do they go direct to studs or install villaboard first and waterproof that for the 150 tile skirting then install the VJ panelling above?

Secondly, do VJ panelling vertical joints need sealing with a compound or is a water resistant paint enough to seal? This VJ is not being used in the shower but behind vanity and an adjacent wall.

Hi @throatgoat,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is wonderful to have you with us.

Any sheet product like this will likely have an installation guide that needs to be followed closely to ensure it is covered by its warranty and that it is compliant with the relevant standards.

I am assuming from your description, you are using Hardie Groove Lining, in which case you should have a good read through the Hardie Groove Lining Installation Guide and Wet Area Construction Application Guide, as well as the National Construction Code - Part 10.2 Wet area waterproofing | NCC.

You should also have a look at this recent discussion which has some similar information to what you are asking - bathroom VJ panelling install.

Assuming you are using Hardie Groove as I suspect, then you can install it direct to the studs, then apply your waterproof membrane up the wall, using Waterproofing Tape at the floor to wall junction, before tiling over the top. If it was a different product, then you should confirm this with the supplier.

At the vertical joints, once again it depends on the specific product, but Hardie Groove is just butt joined, then sealed with No More Gaps before painting.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Jacob

Exactly the information I was after.

I also read in the post that you linked that asked a similar question that hardigroove panelling cannot be used as a splashback, however, if I was to install villaboard and waterproof first and then apply the hardigroove this would be sufficient according to standards?

similar to what they have done here https://www.workshop.bunnings.com.au/t5/Featured-Projects/Coastal-bathroom-reno-with-VJ-panelling/ta...

Re: How to install cement sheet VJ in bathroom?

Hi @throatgoat,

If you wanted to use it behind a vanity without tiles, then yes, you would need to attach it over Villaboard that is waterproofed in line with the NCC.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
