Remove tap to replace washer

Hi I need to replace the washer in the bathroom shower tap but can't figure how to remove the tap. There is no little hole to loosen it. It is an older bathroom.

Thanks Gina

Re: Remove tap to replace washer

Hi @Ginks,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is wonderful to have you with us.

I'm not immediately certain how these taps come off, looking at your photos, so lets go through a few questions that should help us narrow down our approach.

If you feel around the spot where the tap handle meets the spindle, is there a small groove? If so, can you try to take a photo of it? You'd need to place your phone as flat against the wall as possible and aim outwards to see the groove.

Is there anything resembling a screw cap on the tap handle?

Maybe at the tip of the handle?

Have you tried anything like gently pulling on the tap handle or turning off the mains water and turning it anti-clockwise past the usual point?

Do you feel any movement at all when doing either of these things?

Do you know what brand and model of tap handles you have? We might be able to find some installation documents that could shed some light if you do.

I think the most likely answer is that there is a locking nut in the groove I described above on the back of the tap handle, in which case, you would need to follow a similar process to what my colleague @EricL has described in How do I remove theses tap handles, using the spanner in this Kinetic Spout And Handle Repair Kit to loosen the nut

Have a look and let me know what you think.

Jacob
