Renovating 1970s Bathroom

Hello

I am starting to do the reno for a 1970’s bathroom . Trying to see how this can be done in budget .

- Need shower glass and new tap head shower fittings

- Tiles I am unsure if ripping off and re tiling is the only only option ( I saw the tile painting option , but this will be a rental

property so unsure if it would stay ? ) . Also not sure if tiling over the tiles is an option either . Any suggestion would be awesome.

- vanity abs cupboards need to go and replaced

- this does not have a toilet . Unsure how much would the plumbing cost if to get a toilet also included . Still thinking

Would be great to hear some budget friendly ideas .

Also this is a fibro redone with brick . So

ripping off the tiles may require the asbestos

specialists to come

in as well . So trying to work around that .

Thank you very much

regards

Re: Renovating 1970s Bathroom

Hello @Ron11

It's great that my colleague @Jason has pointed you to those useful guides to give you ideas. Would it be possible for you to post the dimensions of your bathroom? This will give me a better idea of the space you have and make my recommended sketches accurate. I will post both ideas for you, with and without the toilet to give you a better idea of what it might look like. Please make sure to indicate where the location of the door is.

We look forward to seeing those measurements.

Eric

Re: Renovating 1970s Bathroom

Hello @Ron11

Thank you for posting that information. If you are after a quick turnaround and refresh, I suggest regrouting the tiles and repainting the room. Removing and replacing the vanity and mirror cabinet with new ones should make for a quick refresh. Your other option is to tile over the existing tiles to avoid having to spend money on removing the asbestos. If you put a toilet in the current shower room, you will have to engage the services of an asbestos removal specialist.

However, if time permits and a proper renovation is within your budget, I recommend re-tiling the bathroom and putting a toilet in. Due to space limitations, I can only put in a glass panel and not a full shower enclosure. If you decide to not place the toilet in, I suggest removing the glass panel to give you maximum use of the shower space. A shower curtain is an option if you wish to limit the amount of water splashing into the rest of the room.

Let me tag our experienced members @prettyliving and @tom_builds for their recommendations on the layout of your bathroom.

Have a look at my sketches and tell me what you think.

If you need more information and advice, please let us know.

Re: Renovating 1970s Bathroom

Hi @Ron11 ,

Sound like you have an exciting project planned. Updating a bathroom can make a huge difference to the amenity of a house.

I agree with the thoughts of @EricL that @tiling over your current tiles and redoing the vanity is probably your best bet for a quick and painless update.

Unfortunately any more than that and I think you will need the asbestos professional to remove the sheeting, as even adjusting the current shower tape will probably involve disturbing the cladding. As @EricL mentioned the addition of any new fixtures, like a toilet, will also involve handling asbestos.

Ideally having the asbestos removed and recladding the room will give you the best finish and will mean that in the future you will be able to make small changes without concern, but obviously asbestos removal isn't cheap so may be outside of your budget.

Let us know which path you decide to go down and keep us updated with your progress.

Best of luck

Re: Renovating 1970s Bathroom

I’m keen to watch it unfold as I will be doing this soon.

Just waiting for our property to finalise.
Our whole property needs renovating that we are buying ,but we are going to take our time as we live in another.

I’m feeling your pain as you never need to overspend but also spend wisely.
Spraying over the tiles could be an option and it works, key is in the prep I feel and quality paint.
We have done this previously in another home we flipped.
Hope it helps and good luck.

Re: Renovating 1970s Bathroom

Thanks to all your comments . I am making slow progress with the lockdown . The walls are stripped on on two sides and new cement sheets are put up . Now trying to get the walls tiled . I was told by a toilet that I will have to remove the floor tiles also as you cannot just waterproof the walls .  Is that a problem ? Could you please let me know ?

thanks
