mixer tap for wash basin

I have a wall mounted mixer tap that is leaking and need to change the cartridge. I removed the handle but cannot locate the grub screw. Anyone can shed experience of how to locate and easily remove the grub screw

Re: mixer tap for wash basin

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Jeffrey1. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about removing a tap handle.

Grub screws on mixer taps are almost always hidden and can be frustrating to find. They are usually tucked away in a spot that is not immediately visible, specifically so the tap looks clean once installed.

Common locations to check are underneath the handle, facing down toward the basin. On some designs the handle needs to be lifted or tilted to reveal the grub screw. Another common hiding place is behind the pin lever itself. In these cases, the lever unscrews from the handle and the grub screw is concealed inside or directly behind it.

The grub screw is what actually locks the handle onto the cartridge spindle. If the handle has already come off without loosening a grub screw, then it is likely either already loose or missing.

If the handle is genuinely off, the next step is normally to remove the decorative cover or flange around the cartridge body. This usually unscrews by hand or with gentle persuasion. Once that is off, you will see a larger retaining nut, and undoing that will give you access to the cartridge itself.

If you are still unsure where the grub screw is, using your phone camera and torch to look underneath and behind the handle area can help, as they are often positioned completely out of direct sight. If it is not under the handle or behind the lever, then unscrew the pin lever to check behind that.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
