How do you remove nicotine stains from walls?

NicotineStains.jpegFor painting over nicotine-stained walls, I suggest using Dulux 4L PRECISION Stain, Smoke & Odour Blocker to seal all the smells in the walls before repainting.

If you are closing the house at night, I suggest leaving an open bag of Jumbuck 7kg Lumpwood Charcoal BBQ Fuel in the room with the strongest smell. The charcoal will absorb all the odours present in the room. - EricL

Note that Dulux 4L PRECISION Stain, Smoke & Odour Blocker is suitable as a primer for all Dulux topcoats, including water-based wall paints. There is no need for a regular primer in between.

For any areas where you won't be using the Stain blocker, I'd suggest you thoroughly degrease the walls and ceiling with Methylated Spirits, changing the cloth regularly. You could then use a standard budget-friendly primer if no significant staining is left. - MitchellMc

Just Starting Out

Using methylated spirits sound good. Will try that next time. I tried solution of 50/50 cleaning vinegar and water and that also seems to remove the worst of the yellow stains from our walls and ceiling before repainting using one coat of under coat one topcoat in the affected room.

It's brilliant to hear from our members what's worked well for them on a project.

Methylated Spirits works wonderfully well to break down thick layers of nicotine build-up. I'm pleased to hear that a solution of 50/50 vinegar and water removes yellow staining. I'll be sure to recommend that method when this topic pops up again.

We look forward to hearing all about your projects and plans around the house and garden. Please reach out anytime you need assistance or have something to share with the community.

Making a Splash

Hi y’all, sorry I have missed you all but think of you often. I am not going to criticise anyone but I would wash the walls with sugar soap before undercoating. On the other hand I can’t stand people who have been away for as long as me coming in and doing just that. I have bad time management. I am in the garden then cooking then clean up then walk the dog and before I know it it’s past midnight. I will pull my head in and see if I can’t get help or give it.brenda
