A new fibre cement and weatherboard panel fence, new low-level deck and timber pergola constructed to comprehensively revamp a backyard and create a wonderful space for outdoor entertaining.

The project

The project was to redesign a modern backyard, maximising the open space and creating a space for entertaining.

Here are the before photos.

Steps

Step 1

Fence replacement and hedge planting.

We removed the old pavers (dirt section), cleaned the whole area and had the old timber fence replaced with a new fence.

We also planted some silver sheen hedging plants and the Magnolia Teddy Bear tree early on.

Step 2

Fibre cement and weatherboard panels.

We then added some structural timber to the fence.

That enabled us to fix some fibre cement sheets and weatherboard sheets.

Step 3

Fence rendering and painting.

We then applied some textured render paint to give the flat sheets some texture and painted the bottom section in ironbark to avoid dirt showing.

Step 4

Turf laying.

We then took out the old lawn and weeds and laid down some Sir Walter Buffalo turf. It took a while to settle in but it eventually got there.

Step 5

Wall, window frame, gutter, fascia and eaves painting.

We finally painted the red walls and the green window frames using a spray gun and spray cans.

Step 6

Deck construction.

We then built the deck. More details here - Low-level composite deck over concrete

Step 7

Pergola construction.

We then built and installed a pergola by attaching it to the existing fence uprights and the fascia (through to the roof rafters) of the house. More details here - Backyard timber pergola.

Evening @diy_hausdesigns

So glad I took my time scrolling through  Far out! You dragged that yard kicking and screaming from being a typically unused and unloved yard into a very modern area. I cannot believe you managed so much! The part I love the most is how you replaced the fence and then installed the fibre cement sheets and weatherboard sheets. That lifted the yard straight out of old.

Love the way you incorporated the support posts with the fence posts as well. That was a nifty idea, nicely worked out.
