The project

We just built our first home and we have two study nooks that needed a couple of desks. Both spaces are identical – 1350mm wide, with ample space for a 600mm deep table top.

We picked up a benchtop panel from Bunnings, a few pieces of 30m x 40m timber, various screws and a few other bits and bobs to get the job done.

Our biggest issue we came across was drilling out the cable hole. The hole saw bits didn't work well, so we ended up using a jigsaw and Dremel multi-tool to tidy it up.

During the process we found that our walls aren't square, which also added a few complications.

We added a cable tray underneath to hide away most of the cables. We used three pieces of 1.2m timber in various sizes, screwed it all together, painted it and then fixed it to the frame. Eventually I want to add a drawer underneath and staggered floating shelves above the desks.

How to make a timber floating wall desk

The Bunnings team shared a step-by-step guide about how to build this floating, wall-mounted timber desk, which gives you work and storage space, without taking up any space on the floor.

Thanks to the guy at bunnings Gungahlin. From wondering how and what are we going to do in this nook to a minimal looking desk!
