Can I pour a concrete pathway on dirt?
Hi @bangorjohnny,
Pouring a concrete pathway directly over dirt is typically not recommended as it provides poor support, you could experience moisture issues, and it's likely to be an uneven surface. Instead, remove 100mm of soil and compact the area to form a level surface. Add a 50mm layer of roadbase or crushed aggregate and compact again. Roll out some builder's plastic over the area. You'll then be able to form up your pathway sides and determine where you'd like your expansion joints to be. Expansion joints are essential on long lengths of pathways to help prevent cracking from movement. Add your rebar or mesh before pouring your slabs.
Here's a helpful guide: How to pour a concrete slab. The only difference between this guide and your project is the compaction, and I'd certainly recommend you do so to help create a more solid base for your larger project.
