Getting Established

From sand to grand: full backyard landscaping

Not only did the house that we bought require a full renovation, the gardens were a literal sand pit. Over the last couple of years, we've worked during winter to establish garden beds, with a mix of native plants plus lavender, as well as a lawn. We also have a fire pit and a putting green. The majority of materials came from Bunnings, with staff at the store in Ellenbrook (WA) convinced that we spend more time there than we do at home!

Steps

Step 1

Start with a sand pit...

Step 2

The original home owners poured a liquid limestone path which just stopped in the middle of nowhere, so we finished it by using galvanised edging to hold a recycled brick gravel path with limestone block steppers. This photo also shows the early stages of planting new garden beds. (Grass at this point is just winter grass and weeds, not actual turf)

Step 3

A full reticulation system was installed by a local contractor, then we could start the process of laying the Matilda Buffalo turf from Bunnings to get a lawn. The garden beds were expanded to further areas and edged with pavers to give freeform shapes. The plants grew a lot during Perth's winter rains.

Re: From sand to grand: full backyard landscaping

Hi @FixerDownUnder,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

You’ve done such a great job turning what was essentially a blank sand pit into a beautiful, functional outdoor space.

The mix of native plants, lavender, and the lovely green turf looks fantastic. The fire pit and putting green are such fun additions too.

You’ve created a stunning backyard that’s both practical and full of character!

Thank you for sharing.

Jacob
