How can I create a garden in front of my new house?

How can I create a garden in front of my new house?

Hello - I love gardens and greenery but the front of my new house has none. Due to the various drains in front of the window am I stuck to container gardening? I do you think I could lift the pavers to create a small garden bed in front of the window. And provide much needed screening there.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Sandra245 and congratulations on your new house. I'm sure you're keen to put your mark on it and truly make it your own home. We're here to help!

Where are you based? It might help members to recommend trees and plants if they have more information. Some wider shots to show the whole front yard might also be helpful.

I always recommend members start with the guide How to plan a garden makeover. It can help you to decide what is most important to you, make a plan, and start to divide the project into manageable chunks so it's not so overwhelming.

Resources like our Top 10 most popular front yard projects and How to improve your home's street appeal should also be really handy for ideas and advice.

Hope that helps.

thanks Jason - these articles are great. I’ll read through the all.  I’m in the Perth Hills. The front faces west. This is a wider shot. There’s not much more really. The window front door area is what bugs me - where I miss greenery. The only other area is my shed and path to side yard. It’s over a sewer easement so I can’t plant a tree there. I need to paint the shed or clad it.

Re: How can I create a garden in front of my new house?

Hi @Sandra245,

Raised Garden Beds & Planter Boxes are likely your best option for in front of the window, but if you can work around the drains, removing the pavers could be an option.

It would be tough to say what we could do without seeing the drains and that space closer up.

You might be able to lift the pavers and install a small garden bed with plants with shallow root systems, but there is always going to be a possibility that the roots would affect the drains.

Do you have any close-up photos of the drains in front of the window?

What is the surface over here?

Is this part of the easement?

Could we use this space to create some more greenery?

Let me know what you think.

Jacob
