How to add front garden edging?

IMG_2683.jpeg

Hi

I need some recommendations on how can I put an edge along the foot path to my front yard which has a significant slope. I like a timber edge that do not need too much digging. The soil is really hard and dry.

I do want to retain the current garden edging. Any ideas how to improve will be appreciated.

Re: Front Garden Edging and landscaping

Hi @CGamage,

Thank you for your question.

If you want to, you could install timber garden edging with no digging at all, by simply driving some wooden stakes into the ground behind the garden edging, then screwing it to the stakes.

In saying this, having your edging sit entirely above the surface of the ground can make it stand out much more than you'd really want it to. I'd suggest using a garden fork as a lever against the driveway to create a small channel, around 50mm deep, then insert the garden edging into this channel, backfill and lightly compact the soil with your feet.

You can then drive some stakes behind the garden edging and screw them to the stakes like I mentioned above. This combination of being slightly buried and then supported by the stakes will make your garden edging much sturdier than one of these solutions on its own.

With the existing edging, it looks like a fair bit of it is buried, so step one would be to expose it all. It doesn't appear to be too deep, so you could likely use something like this Oates Long Handle Deck Scrub Brush or this Sabco Bamboo All Purpose Heavy Duty Scrub to move the dirt and expose it.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Hi Jacob

Thank you. And what type of timber should i order for edging? Total length of the front is about 9m.

Re: Front Garden Edging and landscaping

Hi @CGamage,

You can use 100 x 25mm H4 Treated Pine Garden Edging or 150 x 25mm H4 Treated Pine for something basic.

You could also use timber sleepers if you're looking for something a bit more solid.

You could also use something like this SpecRite 2m Merbau Tapered Garden Border Roll or this Rola Pak 150mm x 2.8m (approx) Treated Pine Ezy Edge Garden Edging if you wanted something a bit more decorative.

Let me know what you think.

Jacob
