Hi everyone,
Can we built a sleeper retaining wall that falls under the drainage easement zone? We were trying to dig a hole for post footing and then realised a pipe was there. Not sure how to fix the sloping and eroding land in my backyard. Please guide me if you have some information. Thanks
Hi @elsa2,
You’ll need to contact your local council to check the requirements for working within the drainage easement. They’ll be able to tell you whether a retaining wall is allowed in that area and if you’ll need to submit plans for approval.
Easements usually have strict rules because they need to remain accessible for maintenance and repairs, so it’s important to get their guidance before you go any further.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the information @MitchellMc .
Could you please recommend the retaining blocks, its just 600mm high max? Thanks in advance.
Hi @elsa2,
For a retaining wall up to 600mm high, I’d recommend having a look at the Brighton Masonry Eziwall Lite Retaining Wall Blocks. They’re a great DIY-friendly option, lightweight, and designed for walls under 1 metre high without needing any mortar. Just be sure to double-check with your council first that blocks are permitted within the easement before you get started.
