How to get rid off winter grass from turf?

Hi All,

I am located in South East Suburbs of Melbourne.

I believe it is winter grass but not sure.

Can someone guide by looking at the photos and provide rectification method?

Regards,

Sal

Re: Get rid off winter grass from turf

Hi @salmanfaiz87,

Thank you for your question about removing winter grass from your lawn.

Your assessment looks to be correct that you are dealing with winter grass. It grows in small clumps with shallow roots and produces fine white seed heads that spread quickly, making it invasive if left untreated.

As it is a clumping grass, the most effective and simple solution is manual removal. If there isn't too much, this is your best option. You can use a tool like this Saxon Weed Puller so you can stay standing while pulling out the weeds. This will greatly reduce the strain on your body and make it a much easier job.

If there is a fairly widespread infestation, then as long as you don't have kikuyu grass, which it doesn't appear to be, you can use Amgrow Winter Grass Killer. Mix it in a Garden Pressure Sprayer, following the instructions on the package for the recommended mixing ratio, then spray it on the clumps.

By removing or treating it before it spreads further, you’ll not only improve the look of your turf now but also reduce the spread of seeds, which will reduce what comes back next season.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Jacob
