Dear Community,
I plan to install the synthetic turf over my backyard wood decking by myself. But I have a few questions I hope you can help with.
Can I install the turf directly on top of my existing decking? I don’t want to remove the deck boards.
There are gaps between the deck boards. Will covering the deck with turf cause moisture issues? Since the turf might block the gaps, I’m worried rainwater won’t evaporate properly.
Regarding those gaps, do you think the turf will sag or sink into them over time? How about the sand infill?
Thank you for your time and advice!
Hello @donjkere
Thanks for sharing your question about artificial turf. Can you install artificial turf directly onto your deck? Yes, is it advisable? no. The turf will cover the gaps in the deck which allows trapped moisture to escape, and it will also hinder air circulation under the deck causing more moisture problems under the deck which can be detrimental to the entire deck assembly. Will the unsupported sections of the surf sink over time? Yes, through exposure to heat and people walking over it, the unsupported sections will eventually sag.
If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Hi @donjkere,
Could you please tell us your goals for this project? How do you want to use the space? Members might then be in a better position to suggest alternative approaches.
Thanks,
Jason
