How to keep mulch away from trunk of tree or shrub

Hi Workshop Community Friends !!! Just sharing with you a good way to mulch around your trees and shrubs. Layer around and make a ‘well ‘ making sure it is NOT touching the trunk. This is important as it will prevent any fungal problems.

Just so you can see I wanted to show you how dreadful our lifeless grey Bassendean Sands are here in Perth.

Re: How to keep mulch away from trunk of tree or shrub

Hi @mich1972

Thank you so much for that gardening advice. I'm in total agreement with you that mulch must be kept away from the trunk of the tree. It causes moisture build-up that leads to mold and fungus development at the base of the tree. Too much mulch smothers the roots of the tree and could cause root growth in the mulch itself.

Thank you for sharing this springtime reminder about mulch.
