Hi, everything one . I have moved to a new house with a large garden . There is a raised garden bed along fence. The fence is deformed due to the pressure from the garden bed and the tree( I suspected )
My plan is to
1. Replace or repair the fence
2. Fixing the garden bed problem ( not putting pressure on the fence
3. Changing the irregular stone garden bed sleeper
4. Remove dead plant along the garden bed
My question are
1. What is the best and cost effective solution to fence and garden bed ? A concrete retaining wall with fence on top ?
2. Do I need to remove the garden bed problem? Apart from the maple tree, I am happy to remove all the plants along the garden bed
Welcome for ideas and advice 🙏🏻

Congratulations on your new home — what an exciting opportunity to shape your garden into a beautiful and inviting space! From what you’ve described, it sounds like the raised retaining wall that the fence sits on has rotted, which is contributing to the fence’s failure. This is a key piece of the puzzle, so replacing that retaining wall will be essential to fixing the problem properly.
Replacing the rotten wall with treated timber sleepers is a solid, cost-effective option that can provide good stability and a fresh look. If you’re looking for something more durable and low-maintenance, upgrading to concrete sleepers would be an excellent choice as well — they’re strong and long-lasting, helping to prevent similar issues in the future.
Once the retaining wall is replaced, you’ll likely find the fence will sit much more securely, so it can be repaired or replaced without worrying about ongoing pressure or movement. Refreshing the garden bed by removing dead plants and updating the stone facing with timber or concrete sleepers will also help tidy the space and keep everything looking great.
