How to replace Holman layering mechanism in hose reel?

Hi, 

The layering mechanism feed broke on my 20m Holman Hose reel. I have a replacement part, including the rotating spindle and clip attached to the spindle.(it's the clip which broke) ... But....

How do I replace the old part? Being plastic, I don't want to force anything. Thx.

Your caution is understandable; it would be disappointing if you were to accidentally break more parts in the process of repairing it. Would it be possible for you to post a photo of the replacement part you have so that we can see which part actually needs replacement. Once we have a better understanding of the parts situation, we'll be able to offer recommendations on how to proceed.

Here is a pic of the new part. 

Whilst the part itself seems very strong, it is the sides that it is seated in that has me worried. I think I will need to remove the screws around the top of the reel in order to pry it open and then try to remove the old guide. (I'm not sure if I will need to remove a whole side or both sides). 

If I take the sides of the reel off, will that cause the internal spring to unravel?

Thank you very much for sharing that photo. Please do not take the Holman hose reel housing apart. Please let us double check with Holman regarding the replacement of this part. There may be other steps that you need to take in order to repair it properly. As soon we have more information, we'll get back to you.

I have spoken with the Holman technical team and they confirmed that there is no risk of the spring coming loose when you are only replacing the layering mechanism. The spring is enclosed in its own inner housing, and you would need to deliberately open that specific section and undo the screws holding the spring cassette together before it could release. The layering mechanism sits well away from that, so you will not disturb the spring as part of this repair.

What you do need to do is relieve the tension on the mechanism so you can lift it out. You are on the right track in thinking that the shell needs to be opened slightly. Undo the screws on the side of the hose reel closest to the layering mechanism. You do not need to remove the entire housing, just enough screws for the two halves of the shell to separate slightly. This gives you the space to pull the sides apart, lift the old guide out of its locating lugs, position the new mechanism, loop the belt over it, then seat it back into the lugs on both sides of the chassis. Once it is sitting correctly, tighten the shell screws again and the housing will clamp everything back in place.

If you run into any issues during the swap, Holman’s technical support team can talk you through it, but that is the correct process for replacing the layering mechanism.

Although it is good to be hesitant in prying apart plastic pieces, the sides of the Holman unit were surprisingly strong but flexible, even after 7 years in the weather. 

Part was replaced with a minor amount of pushing and shoving and all working smoothly again.

As it turned out, the guy who answered my query sent me the spare part I needed free of charge and also helped me to install it with some general instructions. He was very helpful !!

As mentioned above, I was very careful when prying apart the sides to get the old one out of its "clips" and install the new one. Mine was a 2017 model and the Holman guy thought the part might only fit 2019 and above...but he still thought it was worth a try, and yes, it was!
