Hello, our lilly pillys aren't looking too well. We've had extreme winds for the last month
I've done a scratch test and the branches are green
We added fertiliser a month ago also!
Is there anything we can do?
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @sem123. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about Lilly Pilly care.
Your Lilly Pillies actually look like they’re holding up pretty well despite the rough weather. A bit of leaf damage is expected after those winds, but the fact that the branches are still green is a really good sign. You’ve already given them fertiliser, which is great.
Can I ask about the soil quality where they’re planted? If the soil was on the poorer side before planting, did you replace it or add a good-quality potting mix? If not, it could be worth working in some organic compost around the base to improve structure and nutrients. Also, are there any drainage issues in the area? Lilly Pillies like consistently moist soil, but they don’t do well sitting in waterlogged ground.
They generally need a deep watering once or twice a week during hot or windy periods, more if the soil dries out quickly. Since you’ve already fertilised, just keep up with regular feeding according to the product instructions and they should bounce back fine.
I’d also suggest removing the stones around the base and replacing them with a mulch, like sugarcane or bark. Stones can trap heat and make the soil dry out faster, whereas mulch will help protect the roots, keep the soil cooler and hold in moisture.
