Over the years I've been prepared to put in the hark yakka and dig out the pest grass (should be called running weed) using the right technique but with the back now complaining more often I need some assistance so looking for a selective grass killer (apparently containing Fusilade or Salvo).
Cheers
Hi @AlanM52,
Unfortunately, I am not aware of a truly selective herbicide that will reliably kill couch grass without also posing a risk to garden plants.
A practical alternative is careful spot spraying with a non-selective herbicide such as Round-Up. This can work well if you focus only on the couch runners and avoid any contact with desirable plants. Using a piece of cardboard or plastic as a shield behind the couch while spraying is a simple and effective way to protect nearby foliage. Another good option is the Zero weeding wand, which allows you to wipe or dab the glyphosate directly onto the couch leaves so there is very little chance of drift or splash onto other plants.
When mixing and applying glyphosate, make sure you wear appropriate PPE such as gloves, enclosed footwear, long sleeves and eye protection. Mix only what you need, follow the label directions closely and avoid spraying on windy days. It is a bit slower than blanket spraying, but it is much kinder on your back and far safer for the rest of the garden.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
