Re: What insecticide Frangipani plant has black dots

Hi @zillah,

The black dots you're seeing on your frangipani appear to be hard scale insects. They're best treated using a product like Yates Scale Gun or Yates Pest Oil, but I recommend going with the Scale Gun as it's specifically formulated for scale infestations.

When applying it, make sure to thoroughly spray all parts of the plant — both the tops and undersides of the leaves — and target any visible scale directly. Keep in mind that once the scale insects are dead, they often stay attached to the plant and won’t necessarily fall off or change appearance straight away. To ensure the infestation is fully controlled, do a follow-up application about a week later. Two treatments should be enough to get on top of the issue.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Re: What insecticide Frangipani plant has black dots

Good Morning @zillah thank you for the follow up regarding your frangipani. Yes definitely a scale infestation and @MitchellMc gave you great advice. Yes that’s the correct insecticide.
I would not worry about the leaves dropping as it is a deciduous tree and now is the time it will shed its leaves. Please make sure you pick up all the fallen leaves and put them into your general waste bin and not in your compost or just sitting on the soil.
May I ask what State you live in ? We are in Perth and it’s pretty cold and wet here. Our neighbours fence line is full of frangipani trees and they are slowly defoliating and looking like yours.
I hope this helps 🙂🌿 I am just going to tag @Noelle into this post so she can have a look.

Re: What insecticide Frangipani plant has black dots

Hi @zillah,

I can't see anything that would make me concerned. As @mich1972 has already said, being a deciduous tree, now is when the leaves will begin to fall off, which is consistent with what I am seeing.

I'd just continue caring for your plant and monitoring for issues once winter is over.

Right now, I don't see cause for concern.

Jacob
