How to treat rings on Bermuda lawn?

Hi,

I’ve had these rings for the last two summers - I’m not sure what they are or how best to treat them?

The grass is Bermuda, any help appreciated

Thanks

Re: Are these necrotic rings on the lawn? how best to treat it?

Hi @d23,

I don't think it is necrotic rings, as these are not common in warm-season grasses such as bermuda grass, which is a variety of couch grass.

When you say you have had it for the last two summers, did it appear around this time?

Was it in the exact same locations?

It looks like it could be spring dead spot, which more commonly affects couch grass. Here is some info from our supplier Lawn Solutions Australia - What is Spring Dead Spot?

It could also be from lawn grubs. To test for this, you can use the techniques described in How to Identify Lawn Grubs.

Regardless of the specific issue, it looks like your lawn could do with a dethatching and some aeration. This would certainly help if it turns out that it is spring dead spot. I'd suggest you check out How To Dethatch Your Lawn and How To Aerate Your Lawn for some guidance.

Allow me to tag our knowledgeable members @robchin, @Noelle, @Dave-1 and @Adam_W to see if they have any ideas what the issue could be.

Let me know what you think.

Good Afternoon @d23

Do you have some doggos? They remind me of my grandmas yard after the dogs number 2's were left without being picked up for a period of time. Tho they were not exactly round as yours are.

I have had patches of the lawn die back I suspect after people doing renos have washed out or emptied buckets of water mixed with chemicals. The dethatching and aeriation would be a good start with repairing the lawn. I would also be tempted to use some fresh topsoil over the whole lawn once you have done the above.

Re: Are these necrotic rings on the lawn? how best to treat it?

Thanks @Dave-1 @and @JacobZ  much appreciated.

Yes I have a dog but normally he doesn’t go around this section, although I do wash off the swimming pool filter around here.

I’ve giving the section a good aeration and scarify. I have some Surefire Chlortan 720 Fungicide - would it be worth to put it over in this section?

@JacobZ it hasn’t gone away and reappeared, been like that since two summers ago. I did the grub test with soapy water and couldn’t see anything.

thanks again for your help

Hi @d23

I don't think it will be necessary to use a fungicide product as there are no outward signs of fungal infection. I propose following the suggestions given by @JacobZ and @Dave-1. I believe that getting the soil back to a balanced state with proper nutrients will allow the lawn to recover. I also recommend washing your pool filter outside on a concrete surface as the chemicals and debris washing out of it is not good for your soil or lawn.
