Need ideas for new front garden

Good evening, I was wondering has anyone ideas on where I can start in my front garden? I’m thinking about something that’s inexpensive and easy enough to maintain.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Front garden

Hello @RByron

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your front garden.

Nothing is more exciting than starting with a blank slate when designing your front yard/garden. I'm imagining timber edging going around the area with a secondary edging as a border for a small lawn. The interior area that has been blocked off by the garden edging can be filled mulch and draught tolerant plants and hedges. A small, raised garden bed at the far end can serve as a standalone spot for your favoured plant or perhaps an orange tree.

Finally, on the left-hand side near the car, install a small rose climbing arch with a climbing rose or even jasmine for fragrance. This feature will soften the edge of the driveway and create a welcoming, cottage-style accent to the otherwise modern lines of the home.

Re: Front garden

Hi @RByron,

Let me also extend a very warm welcome to the community.

I can understand with a project like this it can be hard to know where to start. That's why I always recommend having a read of the guide How to plan a garden makeover as it explains how important it is to think about your goals for the space and break the project down into manageable chunks.

There's lots of inspiration on the site that you can draw upon for your ideas, like the front yard projects Eric has linked to. I would also look at How to improve your home's street appeal and 10 ways to improve your home's street appeal.

Hope that helps,

Jason

Re: Front garden

Afternoon @RByron

A blank slate  Always fun! And trying to match up how you want the area to be with what you install/plant is the fun part.

You want low maintenance

- Grass with no edging as a large chunk of the low maintenance..

- Maybe a pond with rocks at the back of it to handle your small slope? Solar powered pump so no real power cable needed.

- Maybe a Crepe Myrtle, they are deciduious so let the sun in winter but summer they cool the area.. Requires pruning every two years once established.

Medium maintenance

- Edged grass area, garden beds made from sleepers

- Mulched area (will need weeding ocasionally) Bark mulch/straw or pebbles

- plant low maintenance plants, I personally am a fan of rosemary  but other non succulents are nice as well

High maintenance

- Edged Gardens, Grassed area. Seasonal bright flowers in the garden beds.

- Fruit tree, flowering tree (Will reuire looking after/pruning/ bird and bug protection

- Will require watreing especially in summer.

Extras

- Paved path to the side gate.

- Reticulated watering.

Have a sketch with the ideas, keeping in mind widths plants grow as well as heights. They can be kept under control with pruning but then thats more looking after. The Crepe Myrtles are really nice with their bark and flowers plus great for privacy.
