Re: fertilizers to use in winter

Hi @smithab1c,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

In winter, fruit trees benefit most from soil improvement rather than strong fertilising.

For your apple tree, which is deciduous and dormant during winter, hold off on high-nitrogen feeds. Instead, improve the soil with compost or manure, and organic mulch to boost microbial activity and nutrient retention. As the tree nears bud burst in late winter, you can begin applying a balanced fruit tree fertiliser like Scotts Osmocote Citrus and Fruit Controlled Release Fertiliser to support spring growth.

Citrus trees such as lime, lemon, and orange remain active through winter. Feed them lightly with a slow-release citrus fertiliser or half-strength liquid feed such as Yates Thrive Citrus Liquid Plant Food, along with monthly applications of liquid seaweed like Seasol to support root health and improve stress tolerance. The same soil boosting process should be followed. Add compost or manure and organic mulch to boost microbial activity for the coming Spring months.

Focus on building soil health now to give your trees a strong start in Spring.

Let me know if you have any further questions.
