What will you be planting in autumn?

It's the first day of autumn and soon the weather will be turning cooler.

We might miss the hot sun, but the milder conditions provide the chance to get stuck into the garden.

What will you be planting this autumn?

Re: What will you be planting in autumn?

The garden has loved the rain that we've had in the last few days. I hope today's wind doesn't cause havoc though.

Re: What will you be planting in autumn?

I want to plant some sugar snap peas and snow peas because they are so expensive to buy.

Re: What will you be planting in autumn?

Here's some tips for planting bulbs in autumn, courtesy of Bunnings:

  • Try and plant your bulbs immediately after you buy them – if you can't, make sure you store them in a cool, dark, dry place.

  • Place shorter bulbs at the front of your garden beds.

  • For visual impact, place your bulbs in zigzags rather than in a straight line.

  • Make a grand statement with colour by mixing different bulbs together.

  • If you're unsure how many to plant, more is always better.

Re: What will you be planting in autumn?

We got our autumn/winter vegies planted over the weekend.

In the Vegepod we planted spinach, cauliflower and broccoli.

Re: What will you be planting in autumn?

Harvested the first of the spinach leaves yesterday. Delicious! Here's what the Vegepod is now looking like, including the harvested leaves in a plastic tub...

Lettuce leaves are also ready to be picked...

But very early days for the snow peas and sugar snaps. I probably have neglected them a little - must keep ensuring they are growing upwards...

How are your winter vegetables going?

We harvested some broccoli for last night's dinner. It was terrific.
