Hi Workshoppers,
I'm sheeting kitchen walls 3450 x 2400 high. In what direction should I place the sheets; vertically or horizontally? Also, what type of masonry screws should I use to affix the sheets and how far apart should I space?
Thank you
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @HOLDERT. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about installing Gyprock.
For internal besser brick walls, sheets can be installed either vertically or horizontally, but in practice, horizontal installation is usually the better option. Running the sheets horizontally tends to reduce the number of joints, keeps joins away from corners and high-stress areas, and makes finishing a bit easier.
The standard method is to fix it to masonry using plasterboard stud adhesive, with masonry nails used only to hold the sheet in place while the adhesive cures at about 450mm centres around the perimetre, and a few through the centre of the sheet at up to 900mm centres.
Please note that the adhesive fixing method must not be used where walls are to be tiled.
For full details, including adhesive placement and fixing spacings, it’s worth having a look at the Gyprock Red Book, particularly the section on direct fixing to masonry starting on page 33. It’s the industry reference and well worth following closely.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
