How do I fix the gap between the floorboards and the wall?
Hi @Hazel_T,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
A gap like this would typically be covered by a timber trim, like a skirting board. You can see from the discolouration on the wall and the floorboards that something was likely glued in place there in the past.
Step one would be to remove any residual glue from the floorboards and the wall. A combination of scraping with a scraper and then sanding with some 120-grit sandpaper should do the trick. Once relatively clean, wipe the wall down with some sugar soap to remove any loose material from the surface.
You could then use a timber trim like a 66 x 18mm or some 18 x 18mm Quad to cover the gaps.
As it looks to be a block wall, mechanical fixings like screws or nails could be a bit tricky, so I would just use a nice thick bead of Liquid Nails along the back edge of your trim to stick it to the wall. Clean up any glue that squeezes out while it is still wet.
This will cover the gap between your floorboards and wall nicely.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Jacob
Thanks Jacob, so there is already a trim that is fixed on the top, but that still leaves the gap.
If I understand correctly we do not need to fill the gap then, but just place the trim and seal with liquid nails?
Hi @Hazel_T,
There's no real need to fill the gap unless you were looking to prevent draughts. The trim is purely an aesthetic thing to cover the gap. The Liquid Nails is just there to stick it in place; it is not supposed to create a seal.
If you wanted to create a seal, you would first want to fill the gap with something like this Selleys No More Gaps Timber Floors Gap Filler, then apply the trim over the top. If any of the filler will be visible, make sure to select the colour that closely resembles your floorboards.
If you did it this way and there was a slight gap poking out from under the trim, then the No More Gaps would be fine to fill it with as well.
Let me know what you think.
