How to replace handle and lock on door?

The lock on the door has had it and won't lock anymore. I'm looking at possibly replacing the handle and lock which will save a lot of money calling out the locksmith. I'm just wondering how hard it really is to do since I've not done it before.

Apparently these handles are no longer available. So I'm looking for a new handle that would fit the space of the current handle and lock mechanisms. Not sure if that exists? Perhaps also looking for something similar in the colour black.

I don't know if it would be better to get the locksmith or try a DIY?

Re: How to replace handle and lock on door?

The brand is Interlock. I will probably need to buy a kit. I measured the actual handle and it's 190 mm length and 30mm width. Can't measure anything else cause finally got it to partially lock. I'm just wondering if Bunnings will have something close enough there that I can chat to a team member about.

Re: Replacing a handle and lock on door

Hi @Innov8tive,

To be 100% honest with you, if you didn't have any experience with door locks, it would be pretty difficult. The chances of us finding a handle that matches up with the existing holes exactly are pretty slim, so you would likely need to cut new holes in the door and bog the old ones. With the door having an exposed timber finish, this would make it even more difficult because you would need to use a timber filler that matches the colour of the door.

To have any hope of matching it up with a suitable replacement, we would need you to remove the handle so we can see what the holes in the door look like.

I'd be more than happy to help out where I can, but there's a good chance this one is best left to a locksmith.

Let me know what you think.

I agree with you. I actually took a trip to Bunnings and had a chat with them about it. After a few phonecalls to companies that have similar locks from the same brand I realised it's best to pay the locksmith and get it done. All a learning curve. Cheers.

Re: Replacing a handle and lock on door

Hi @Innov8tive,

I completely agree that it is all a learning curve, and sometimes part of that learning is knowing when it's best to get a specialist in.

It would be a shame to have put so much work into restoring the door only to damage it trying to replace the lock.

Fingers crossed, they will have a solution that works well for you.

Re: Replacing a handle and lock on door

@JacobZ

The locksmith did have a solution and the new one has been installed. It's so much better and the new handle will go well with the door restoration.

It's hard work renovating an entire house inside and outside on your own - aside from when you get a specialist in.

This house had been neglected for well over ten years and the repairs and renovations have been monolithic.

Still so much to do
