I’m trying to install a vertical window air conditioner in my room. The unit’s frame supports a height range of 85–140 cm, and my window opening is exactly 140 cm. In case this turns out to be a tight or imperfect fit, I’m wondering if there’s a safe and practical way to add a bit of height (raise a bottom and get a groove just like before) to the window frame so the window height comes in under 140 cm and fits the AC frame without issue. Any suggestions or DIY solutions would be greatly appreciated.
As I’m currently renting, the solution would need to be non-permanent and not cause any damage to the window frame. Any advice or DIY ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Shashika. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about window air conditioners.
This is really one of those cases where you need to wait until the AC unit and its frame are on hand and physically offer them up to the window. On paper, 140 cm sounds tight, but in reality it may fit fine or only catch in one small spot. Until you can see exactly where it’s contacting, any solution is mostly guesswork.
Also, keep in mind that these frames are usually designed to be screwed into the existing window frame to safely support the unit. That requirement will largely dictate what options you have, especially in a rental. Sometimes the AC frame can sit to the inside or outside face of the window rather than fully inside the opening, which can change the effective height.
Once you’ve test-fitted the frame, a couple of photos will make it much easier to give specific advice.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
