just wondering if i was to use Flatpax cupboards as an outdoor kitchen would it be ok? It sits underneath awning and only get wet when heavy winds and rain. I would prime and paint with exterior paint and seal to reduce risk of water damage. Cheers
Hi @thistle086,
A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
As Flatpax Modular Cabinets are made from melamine-coated chipboard, they are not an ideal choice for outdoor areas, as chipboard is susceptible to swelling if water finds its way inside the chipboard.
With this being said, melamine cupboards are frequently used in bathrooms and wet areas; however, they usually use moisture-resistant melamine like these Bedford Moisture Resistant Base Slimline Cabinets do.
Physically, you could use the Flatpax cabinets and coating them with exterior paint would help to seal them from the water, but you do run the risk of them prematurely degrading if water is allowed to sit on them and it finds a way to seep into the core of the materials.
Ultimately, there are no building codes or anything of the like stopping you from using them outdoors, but it is unlikely you would be covered by a warranty if they were to fail prematurely.
Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
