This used to be a car park and a tennis court. A 1960s building with upgrades in the 80s and more recently purposed as an apartment complex. The old ambassador hotel in Frankston has a small group of healthy individuals trying to clean up the space and make it family friendly once more.
The dregs of paint from secondhand paint cans. Old wooden boxes from hard rubbish. An acquired expression of interest throw out garden bed from local council with awnings. Some paint brushes. Grit and good humor with snacks. Local consultation with stakeholders like a body corporate and a owners committee. Tenacity. Plants. Lots of other random things from bunnings like nails and wheels (to move the boxes if needed).
Calum's quick wit. Kira's country philosophy. Cassie's hay bails. Local possum poo fertilizer.
Look at the facility with utter disgust and disarray with slight pessimism. Then start painting just to see if your arms work....
Then grab a hardwood box someone threw out and with great optimism that we could grow something edible out of it.....put wheels on it and start painting it!
Paint more. Fill one box in with dirt and plants. Look for plastic pots and more plants. Start another wooden box. Painting waves to reflect local surf culture. Grab magazine clips for inspiration
Build yourself some shade so you are not burnt by the harsh Australian sun. Keep painting a white canvas....
Grab some locals. And some snacks to entice locals to help paint.....keep painting.....
Get some locals to help move giant wooden planters that were at the local tip........keep painting.....
Invite some locals to come have a look.......
Get someone to help you assemble all the wooden boxes and ornings.....KEEP PAINTING.....
Fill boxes with dirt and plants....
Stand back ....your nearly done....re arrange garden, especially with wheels to enhance Feng Shui.
Hi @AngelaMcCart,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is wonderful to have you with us.
What an inspiring transformation – turning a once neglected car park and tennis court into a thriving kitchen garden is no small feat. It’s evident that this project is about far more than just plants; it’s about reclaiming space, building community, and creating beauty from the overlooked and discarded.
The use of second-hand materials, from old wooden boxes to leftover paint and even possum poo, adds such an authentic and sustainable layer to the project.
It’s proof that great things can happen without shiny new resources - just a bit of vision, some tools, and a whole lot of community spirit.
I hope you continue to grow this wonderful space to share with the members of your community.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful journey.
Jacob
