Concrete that repairs itself

Concrete that repairs itself

This popped into my Facebook feed today and I found it fascinating - concrete that repairs itself. Who thought biology could help in construction!

Maybe one day this new technology could help tackle problems in older buildings, which is timely today given balcony collapses are in the news - http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/south-yarra-balcony-collapse-apartment-blocks-across-melbourne-pot...

@AHoyThat balcony collapse is what's know in engineering as a brittle failure
The masonry balustrade should have been adequately reinforced to prevent a unsuspecting or brittle collapse
The self crack repairing Bio-Concrete uses calcium carbonate filler to fill the cracks

the steel reinforecement is what provides Flexural strength

Apparently there's already a spray on solution that can help fill gaps in existing concrete.

Re: Concrete that repairs itself

I have to check this out at Bunnings, have some cracks in shed floor! Thanks for post.

This sounds like a great product, is it available at Bunnings?

I think its still in development/prototype stage @Helen. But hopefully not too far away from commercial release.
