How to add rain protection to outdoor living area?

So I had a roof built over my deck to increase my outdoor living, my original plan was to add decking boards and create a slatted screen in the space above fence,  But the north facing space cops rain and wind soaking the deck. I’m now thinking of something polycarbonate, clear as I don’t want to lose light, is there a product corrugated or plain that anyone has previously used in similar situation

Hi @Dani64,

The Handi-roll polycarbonate will work but needs to be fixed down adequately as it is quite flexible. It appears like you have plenty of fixing points to work with though. Another option is the twinwall polycarbonate which is a rigid sheet. The twinwall will give a more upmarket finish than a corrugated sheet.

Why not do a combination? I'd suggest using 69 x 15mm, 42 x 28mm or 42 x 18mm FJ Pre Oiled Merbau Screening instead of the decking as it will give a more screen-like finish. You could then add the Handi-roll on the outside of the screening to prevent rain from entering. That will keep the area weatherproof but also add an attractive screen.

Let me mention one of our knowledgeable members @Jewelleryrescue to see if they have any thoughts.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Do you think I’d lose too much light tho with slats? I’m painting them white if I do go that way and using treated pine 🙂

Re: How to add rain protection to outdoor living area?

It depends on how closely you position the slats @Dani64. If you leave a decent space between them then it shouldn't be too bad. However, if you are after the maximum amount of light possible, it would be best not to add them.

I ended up going with clear polycarbonate , just waiting for rain now 🙂
