How to build a fence extension above a Colorbond fence?

How to build a fence extension above a Colorbond fence?

I’m looking to build something like the fence extension in the photo (slatted panels above a Colorbond fence) for extra privacy. I’ve seen similar panels at Bunnings but I’m not sure what I’d actually need to buy or the best way to put it all together.

A few questions:

  • What exact materials do I need from Bunnings to build this? (slat kits, posts, brackets, screws, etc.)
  • Is it better to attach extensions directly to the fence or install freestanding posts just behind it?
  • If freestanding, what’s the best way to secure the posts to the ground — concrete footings, base plates, or something else?
  • For low maintenance and longevity, would aluminium or timber be better?
  • Any tips for installation if I don’t have much DIY experience?

Any advice or step-by-step guidance would be really appreciated!

Re: Free Standing Fence

Hello @Accomplished_B

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about extending your fence.

You do have a few choices in regards to fence extensions, but it all depends on the type of fence that you have. For example, if you have a Colorbond fence it's possible to extend it using the same materials as show in these discussions: Fence extension for extra privacy by @Shannon and How to add an extension to a Colorbond fence by @ProjectPete

If you have a timber fence, it might be possible to install a Matrix fence extension as seen in this guide - MATRIX Fence Extension

However, in regards to your questions the materials you'll need will be the following:

Is it better to attach extensions directly to the fence or install freestanding posts just behind it? It's more cost effective to attach the extension to the existing fence. A self-standing fence will need to be dug into the ground, and a concrete foundation poured in. For low maintenance an aluminium post would last much longer, and it does not need to be sanded or painted annually.

If you can post a picture of your existing fence, we'll be able to confirm which extension method will work best.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Hi @Accomplished_B,

Can you confirm we are discussing a colorbond fence and also please post a photo.

Search Bunnings for 'colorbond fence extension'.

https://www.bunnings.com.au/search/products?page=1&q=colorbond+fence+extension&sort=BoostOrder

and also the Matrix video That @EricL posted.

Cheers

Re: How to build a fence extension above a Colorbond fence?

Hello @Accomplished_B

Thank you for sharing that photo of your fence. Now that we've established that you have a Colorbond fence you can now focus on Colorbond extensions, or the Matrix fence extension set. If you go to page three of this discussion - Attaching Colorbond fence extension - Page 3 you'll see an excellent method of extending your Colorbond fence.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: How to build a fence extension above a Colorbond fence?

Is there any service provided by bunnings for this? How much would it cost and do I need to buy the extension separately or will it come with the service?

Re: How to build a fence extension above a Colorbond fence?

Hello @Accomplished_B

I'm sorry but the store currently does not offer this type of service. However, I propose posting the job on either Airtasker or Hipages with as much detail as possible along with the fence picture. Hopefully you'll get an immediate response from the trades and offer you a quote for the job. My best advice is to get at least three quotes and always ask to see a reference so that you can see their past projects. I also suggest checking their social media posts.
