Re: retaining wall

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Houseproject07. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about retaining walls.

Could you let us know on which side of these retaining walls the soil will be going? That will help determine the best way to tie the two together.

I’d suggest adding some treated pine sleepers to bridge from one wall to the other on the soil side. These can be screwed directly into the back of the existing retaining walls using 100mm bugle screws. This will create a solid connection between the two walls and prevent any soil from escaping through the gap.

It’s best to install these bridging sleepers on the same side as the soil. That way, when the soil presses against them, it also pushes against the existing retaining walls, strengthening the structure. If you were to install them on the opposite (non-soil) side, the soil pressure would constantly try to push the sleepers away from the wall.

Once filled, the soil should cover most of the sleepers, giving you a neat and secure finish.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: retaining wall

Which side soil is there is only space for 250mm but sleeps are 500mm, can I cut farden edge this size and install here

Re: retaining wall

Hi @Houseproject07,

Garden edging is unlikely to have enough strength to hold back the soil.

I'd suggest you just cut a pine sleeper so it is long enough to run from just past the retaining post to about 50mm past the steel post on the right.

You can then cut a small piece of the sleeper and screw it to the back of the existing sleepers here.

You can then screw the sleeper to the small sleeper block and the sleeper at the top of the photo. You can use Window Packers to pack things out a bit if needed.

You can use Buildex® 14G x 75mm Class 4 Bugle Batten Screws to screw things together.

Once the sleeper covers the back of the posts, you can leave it as is, or you can screw a short length of sleeper between the steel posts to the front of the sleeper you've just installed to help fill out the gap and make things look more uniform.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob
