How to calculate posts and bearers for a deck?
Hey there!
I am thinking about building a DIY deck and I put together this decking design. I am now working on the decking frame plan. I know that for the posts it is better to use H4 treated and the bearers and joists can use H3 treated. As for the joists' spacing, I know that I should be spacing them no more than 450mm. Now, I've done some research and I can't get my head around those span tables to decide how many posts I need and the spacing between bearers. Does anyone out there would be able to help me with that?
Your help is much appreciated.
Thanks
Felipe

That attachment method would be fine, @felipenm. Just ensure you bolt or screw through the timber to secure it.

Re: Deck - How to calculate posts / bearers?
Thanks. Do you recommend any bolt or screw for this type of work?

Galvanised bolts would be the way to go, @felipenm. Just select some that are long enough to pass through the timbers.

Re: Deck - How to calculate posts / bearers?
@MitchellMc It is me again 😁! I was wondering whether I could use stirrups but lay the bearers straight on the stirrups instead of having posts on the stirrups, and then bearers on posts. Would that be an acceptable way of building the subframe?
The idea would be to have a 90mm stirrup, and then two 45mm beares attached together laid straight on the stirrup to occupy the 90mm stirrup space.
Regards
Felipe

Re: Deck - How to calculate posts / bearers?
@MitchellMc, first of all, thanks for your help. I finished building the deck and I thought it would be a good idea to share the result here. It is a lot of work but I am happy with the outcome. Thanks again. I hope this brings a bit of motivation for those out there thinking about building their own deck.

Re: Deck - How to calculate posts / bearers?
Hi @felipenm,
As I said in your other post, How to fix backyard drainage issue, nice work with the deck.
Thank you for sharing the journey that was your decking project.
Any plans on what to do next?

Re: Deck - How to calculate posts / bearers?
Hi Mitchell, im building a single level deck 6m x 5m.
What is my spacing for supports if I use 90mm joists? Can I use smaller joists?

Re: Deck - How to calculate posts / bearers?
Hi @Kdukeson732,
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
I'd suggest having a quick read through How to understand deck components and How to understand deck span tables for a bit of guidance.
As one of our main suppliers for H3 framing timber, I use the Hyne Joist Span Table as a reference when designing decks.
If you are using 90x35mm, they are capable of spanning 900mm between bearers. If you are using 90x45mm, they are capable of spanning 1400mm between bearers.
It's not typically recommended that you use smaller timbers than this when building a deck frame.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
Jacob
