Re: How to connect a cat run to Colorbond fence?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @5uperman. It's terrific to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about attaching objects to a Colorbond fence.

The best way to connect a cat run to a Colorbond fence will largely depend on the size of the cat run and the forces that will act on the fence. Colorbond fences are not designed for load-bearing purposes. The posts and footings are only intended to support the weight of the fence itself. This means you shouldn’t rely on the fence to carry the weight of a cat run. You could use timber or similar supports pinned to the fence to help hold parts of the cat run in position, but the fence itself shouldn’t be expected to bear a significant load. It would help to know more about your cat run: is it a prefabricated unit, or are you planning to build it yourself? Understanding how you intend to attach it and why it needs to connect to the fence will allow for more specific advice and safer solutions for both your fence and your cat.

Perhaps if you can draw us a sketch, that would help convey the project.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell

Hi @5uperman,

Bailey and Zia say Hello.

To confirm... you want suggestions for DIY cat run with one side against the fence.

If that's the case I can provide a sketch using something like 70 x 35 H3 framing, wire mesh, poly roofing and... no need to dig post holes or use concrete.

Cheers

Aw they are gorgeous!

I am chasing just some brackets that I can put a plank of wood on.

I will have cat netting from the fence to the plank of wood.

I need it off the ground along the fence as we have snakes where I am.

Thank you for your reply

Re: How to connect a cat run to Colorbond fence?

the cat "run" itself will just be brackets and planks of wood about 180mm off the fence.
will the fence supports hold that kind of weight?

thank you for your reply

Select a size to suit the planks and use hex head metal screws to secure.

And to keep everyone happy provide additional support (shared load) using star pickets.

Cheers

Re: How to connect a cat run to Colorbond fence?

Hello @5uperman

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about setting up a cat run.

It's great that you've received excellent advice from @AlanM52. My best advice is to make sure that the cat run is as structurally light as possible. But as strong as possible to prevent the cats from getting out. I propose doing a pre-assembly of the parts so that you can actually see how big the run will be and get an estimate of how heavy the structure will be as well.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
