Hoping someone can help with some suggestions, I’m not even sure if the surface is textured paint or render

Welcome to the Bunnings workshop community. It's marvellous to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your BBQ finish.
Looking at the photo you posted it appears to be a paint texture like the one produced by Dulux 10L Texture Full Cover Exterior Paint. It looks like a fine sand particle surface that has been spread on with a roller.
I propose trying to take a large chip off the surface of your BBQ, at least the size of a one-dollar coin. Bring this over to your local store and speak to the senior paint specialist and have them assess the chip. They should be able to match it to the texture sample board at the store.

You'd need to prepare the area by removing all loose and degraded paint with a paint scraper. Once you've chipped away the loose paint and reached areas that are still firmly applied, you can sand the edges so the paint layer transitions smoothly. All surfaces must then be thoroughly cleaned and free of dirt, loose paint, and flaking paint. Depending on which paint product you go with, you might need to prime the surface before painting. Full preparation and application details will be on the product.
Remember your PPE, including safety glasses, a face mask and gloves.
