How to fix timber beam to brick?

first image is the area we are working with, second image is the vision (specifically the timber beams)

The wall structure seen in the first photo will be removed so it’s a clean canvas.

My question is what would be the best way to fix timber beams to the brick? And also setting timber posts into the ground?

Re: how to fix timber beam to brick?

Hello @domonique

I propose emulating the effect but instead of fixing the timber beams to the brick wall I propose adding an extra post at the end making it independent of the wall. It will look like a door frame embedded in the ground. This will give you the opportunity to have the timber beams closer to one another and have more of them to create that pathway entrance effect.

The posts can be installed in the same manner as fencing posts with holes dug into the ground and using concrete as a base. They can be supported with other timber pieces while the concrete cures. If you really want that profile on the second picture the timber beam can be secured to the brick wall using angle brackets.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their recommendations.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

A great looking project @domonique

There are quite a few variable in answering your question which are governed by post height, thickness and ground type. Then how the horizontal section will and where fix to the house.

I would be inclined to get a draftsperson to assist with this information. This investment would result in exacting dimensions and requirements of fixings etc to suit your exacting needs.

Re: How to fix timber beam to brick?

Good Morning @domonique

That would be a nice path to walk down, especially in the evenings. Like @EricL I think you will have to modify the structure a bit to make it work.

I prefer things to be freestanding, tho that will give a doorway feel. You cant really attach the horizontal beams to the brickwork as the overall height from the ground to the bittom of the beam will be low. You could potentially attach it to the eve of the house but that means that the gutter, the facia needs to be removed and strengthened to carry the load. Then somehow the gutter goes back.

I think the two post support would be the better option as in easier to install and maintain.
