How to install VJ panelling under a roof?

Hi, im looking at installing VJ panelling on the underside of our outdoor entertainment area. the area is fitted with a colour bond roof which protects the area from rain etc. Should i install the wet area VJ boarding or would the std be okay.

There would be a gap of around 40mm between the boards and the colour bond roof, should i put a "pink bats" or similar in this gap as an insulation.

lastly when i cut the boards to fit what sealant should i use on the ends of the boards to protect them from weather.

thanks Chris

Re: How to install VJ panelling under a roof?

Hi @chrish57,

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

In an outdoor area, you would have to use either the EasyCraft EasyVJ100 Semi Exterior or James Hardie Hardie Groove Lining, each of which has its own set of installation requirements.

Easycraft's can be found here - Easycraft - Product Fact Sheet & Installation Guideline

James Hardie's can be found here - Hardie Groove Lining Installation Guide.

When reading these installation guides, make sure to note the framing requirements and the screw and glue patterns, as these must be achievable with the framing of your roof. If it is not, additional framing will need to be added. Noting that you have only a 40mm gap between the colorbond and the bottom of the framing, which is the profile of a roof batten, I'd say there's a good chance you'd need to add additional framing.

While there isn't a requirement for you to install insulation in the ceiling cavity, it would certainly help to keep it warm in winter and cool in summer. Some ceiling insulation is definitely worth considering.

Both EasyVJ and Hardie Groove require an expansion gap around all edges, so the cut ends would need to be covered by a trim, which can then be sealed with No More Gaps.

Let me know what you think and if you have further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Re: How to install VJ panelling under a roof?

Thanks for that Jacob,

I should have  said there are 7 main joists, that run say (north south)  that are 160mmx40mm that are 1200mm apart , and the 40 m battons which are 720mm  apart run the width of the roof  (east west) i was  planning to cut the board to fit between the main joist but  the length i need is 4.7 meters , can you join VJ panels end on end so  it looks good. Alternatively i cut the boards so the paneling goes east west.

You'd likely need to use a cover strip over that join end-to-end, @chrish57. You could potentially try to form a joint and seal it with Sikaflex 11FC, although the level of finish achieved would be somewhat unknown.
