How to install side gate on round post?

Hello fellow DIYos

I wanted some tips , ideas on installing a side gate next to fence on a round post ?

Measurments are 140cm wide with 125 cm Length.

I can not weld. But have metal drill bits to secure with bolts and screw.

Hi @jzb02,

You could use T-gate hinges or Joiner plates with regular gate hinges.

Cheers

Thank you. So they just screw directly in with metal self drilling screw. I was bit concerned with round metal post. You reckon it shpuld be ok.

Yes... and what I usually do is clamp (about halfway) the post side of the hinge in a vise and hammer to curve over the hinge so it's more contact with the post. Start by first securing the hinge using the three inside holes... then the two outside holes.

Re: How to install side gate on round post?

Mounting a gate to a round post is a bit limiting @jzb02, but it’s not impossible.

There aren’t many off-the-shelf hinges designed specifically for flat-frame gates onto round posts, so the approach suggested of conforming a standard gate hinge to the curve of the post by @AlanM52 is a reasonable first option.

One thing to be aware of is the post itself. It looks like a relatively lightweight round post set in concrete and currently supporting the fence. Hanging a 1.4-metre-wide gate off it will introduce a fair amount of leverage. The fence attached to the post will help counter some of that load, but you may still see a bit of flex over time, particularly if the gate is solid or used frequently.

There are purpose-made fittings for tubular farm gates onto round posts, but options are quite limited for standard DIY gates. If you try the adapted hinge method and find the post moves too much or the gate doesn’t stay aligned, the more robust solution is to install a new square post specifically for the gate. It’s more work upfront, but it gives you a much stronger and longer-lasting result.

Please let us know if you have further questions.

Re: How to install side gate on round post?

Hi @jzb02

Looking closer at the photo you posted - there appears to be a bolt welded to the pole? Any idea why?

I was thinking of cutting this off and bolting something like 25mm square tube to hold the T-hinge.

What's opposite this post? Can we hinge from the other side and just latch this pole?

Just a thought.

Cheers.

CC: @jzb02,

Are you installing a regular hinged gate?

Re: How to install side gate on round post?

Thanks MitchellMC

The round post is quute heavy metal and secured in concrete. The previous gate was seem like welded with screw on this post. I am thinking probably a flat post secured to rpund post and then attach the gate to flat post with screw in hinges.
